What the Background Remover does
Background Remover cuts a subject out of a photo and lets you drop in a new backdrop — a solid color, a gradient, a soft blur of the original scene, one of a few preset looks, or your own uploaded image. It's built for product shots, portraits and profile photos where the background needs to change or disappear.
How it works
As soon as you upload a photo, the tool scans inward from the edges of the image, grouping together connected areas of similar color into a background region — this works well when the background is reasonably plain or visible around the subject, which is the case in most everyday photos. The edge between subject and background is softened slightly for a natural cutout. Because this is a lightweight, local approximation rather than a deep-learning model, tricky edges (fine hair, glass, very busy backgrounds) may need a manual touch-up, which is exactly what the Keep/Protect and Remove brushes are for.
How to use it
- Upload a photo — the background is detected and removed automatically.
- Choose a background style from the swatches or the gallery, or set a custom color, gradient, blur or uploaded image.
- Use Keep/Protect to restore any part of the subject that was removed by mistake, Remove to clear any background left behind, and Eraser to undo a brush stroke.
- Adjust the zoom and position so the cutout sits well on its new background.
- Press Preview to check the result, then Download PNG (keeps transparency) or Download JPG (flattened).
Formats and limitations
JPG, PNG and WebP images up to 10MB are supported as input and as a custom background. PNG downloads keep transparency for the Transparent option; JPG downloads are always flattened onto the chosen background, since JPG doesn't support transparency. Detection works best when the background is visible around most of the subject's edges — a background that fills the entire frame with no visible edge, or one that closely matches the subject's own color, is harder to separate automatically.
